Best Travel Spot?

Image
I have always been interested in what awesome tourists attractions were located in Africa. Therefore, this week I took the opportunity to research some places I might want to visit within the African Continent!  The first place I found is Zanzibar! Zanzibar is an island located off the coast of Tanzania! I looked at many photos and it looks so beautiful. The waters are a pretty turquoise color. I also read you could do things like swim with dolphins, snorkeling, visit the forest, and lots more! Reference for Photo Another place that looked like a beautiful place to visit is Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. This trip would be more of a vacation where you get more in tune with nature...doing things such as hiking or water sports!  Reference for Photo

African Waist Beads

Image
Hello Everyone!  I have recently had more of an interest in African culture and getting to learn more about my ancestors. A while back I had joined a group on Facebook specifically for Black girls and developing self-love. One thing that has been mentioned quite often is waist beads. So I took the opportunity to research and get more information on these waist beads and why African and African American women tend to wear them.  Now you may be asking what are waist beads? Wearing waist beads can be religious or cultural. They have been around for a long time, can even be traced back to ancient Egypt. Women are also known to wear waist beads cause they symbolize fertility, femininity, spirituality, and sensuality. These beads are also a way of expression. They can be made of many different materials. Such as glass, crystals, seeds, etc. It is honestly is quite a spiritual meaning. If you go into different crystals they help with different things and/or different chakras....

My History

Good Afternoon! A few years ago I actually had an ancestry DNA test done. I am biracial. In regards to my African identity, I am 17% Cameroonian, Congolese, and Bantu, 11% Nigerian, 6% Ivorian, 4% Malian, and 2% Beninese and Togolese, and 2% Senegalese. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about the main identity; Cameroonian and Congolese! Cameroon, Congo, and Bantu While searching on the web I found the following... Cameroon is located in Africa between western and central Africa. Its name comes from Rio Dos Camarões. This means "river of prawns".  Cameroon looks like a beautiful place full of many different ecosystems. There are mountains, savannahs, basins, coastal plains, forests, etc. The country has more than 200 different ethnic groups. There are 3 main linguistics; Bantu, Sudanic, and Semi Bantu. Sudanic tend to live in the North, while Bantu tend to live in the south.  Helpful Link: Information on Cameroon The Democratic Re...

Anessa's African Learning Journey

Hello! 😁 I am currently a full-time student at Hawkeye Community College. I am a liberal arts transfer student with an emphasis in Social Work! I am eager to share my acquired knowledge of Africa as I go through my African Cultures class. This topic has always been something that sparks my interest! I have always wanted to learn more about my ancestors. I also would love to take my knowledge of African Culture into my social work career, so I can have a better understanding of the continent and the individuals who call it home.
